Utopia and Collapse

Utopia and Collapse documents the rise and fall of Metsamor, the Armenian atomic city. It brings together a history of the place and a photographic research with some academic essays. Metsamor’s architecture is a unique example of an Armenian variety of Soviet Modernism. Among the topics discussed are Armenia’s cultural and architectural histories, the typology of Soviet atomograds and the phenomenon of modern ruins. This book, based on the multidisciplinary Rethinking Metsamor research project, for the first time tells the city’s story and reveals what lessons can be learned from it.

Hill of Owls

The designer aimed for the book not only to remind of the past, but also to reflect the present, so the bright orange and black colours was chosen, which is a symbol of energy, creativity, and the thematic colour of the present institution at the premises. The book is designed in a minimalistic way while the sleeve itself has no title, only the period of time and a stylized owl encoded on its front, which is a symbolic way of marking the centenary and school location. Classic printing technologies, such as offset printing and hot stamp foiling, was used to achieve the result.

Memories of the East Street in Xi'an

The Memories of the East Street in Xi'an is a slice-by-slice study of the city of Xi'an. The entire book contains hand-drawn illustrations, architectural mapping, trademark advertisements, documentary photographs, and newspaper copies. At the same time, a variety of printing techniques are used to fully reflect the editor's original concept of presenting and reconstructing local memory through artistic intervention.

Gongche Sketch Book

Through innovative design, Gongche Sketch Book facilitates a profound understanding of the charm of Gongche notation among people from different cultures, languages, and eras. It serves as a cultural conduit, connecting the past with the present, allowing the enchanting resonance of Gongche to spread globally. Gongche Sketch Book’s unique paper tape mechanism breathes life into the Gongche characters, creating a three-dimensional and dynamic representation. This ingenious design not only pays homage to tradition but also provides music enthusiasts with a multisensory feast.

3D Embossed

The book uses 3D embossing to document and highlight the intricate details of the works meticulously crafted by traditional Singaporean artisans, from paper dragon boats and Indian jewelry to Peranakan beaded shoes. The color pages symbolize the rise and fall of traditional crafts, as the industry begins its developmental period (dull) to its golden age (yellow) and gradually fades (white). A pastel chalk is attached for readers to shade the pages and discover the lost arts of this intangible cultural heritage of Singapore, as only we humans can safeguard, support and bring it back.
