Zoom

The Zoom exhibition (Museum of Ethnography, Budapest) takes an unconventional approach to the museum’s collection. The content structure is shaped by shifts in viewpoint presenting objects and object masses from new angles. The catalogue attempts to introduce this approach through different graphical and bookbinding-printing solutions. The book’s inner spine features a uniquely generated pattern for each copy which is a reinterpretation of the embroidered motifs typical to Hungarian folk art. The exhibition was designed by art1st Design Studio, lead designer Daniel Taraczky.

Hill of Owls

The designer aimed for the book not only to remind of the past, but also to reflect the present, so the bright orange and black colours was chosen, which is a symbol of energy, creativity, and the thematic colour of the present institution at the premises. Classic printing technologies, such as offset printing and hot stamp foiling, was used to achieve the result.

Gongche Sketch Book

Gongche Sketch Book is an interactive book about Gongche notation, a traditional Chinese musical notation system. The book presents a redesigned set of Gongche characters, refined in stroke direction, thickness and size for clarity. A 30-note hand-cranked music box movement is built into the book structure. A punched paper tape matching the notation is inserted into the movement, and turning the crank produces the written pitches. The bare wire hardcover binding exposes the spine and the layered pages. The design lets readers study Gongche notation by sight, sound and touch.
